In streaming, playback is the product
Viewers do not evaluate a streaming service on its feature list.
Viewers do not evaluate a streaming service on its feature list. They evaluate it on whether the stream starts in under two seconds, holds resolution through a network dip, resumes where they left off on a different device, and does all of it identically on a five-year-old smart TV and a flagship phone. A defect in a settings screen is an annoyance. A playback failure at the start of a live event is a churn event with a support queue attached.
That difference changes what QA has to be. Feature-level coverage is necessary and nowhere near sufficient, because the failure modes that actually cost subscribers live in DRM licence acquisition, adaptive bitrate behaviour, ad-insertion timing, and platform-specific player builds that no amount of functional Testing exercises.

That is the difference between a vendor who can write a streaming test plan and one who already knows that Widevine L1 and L3 fail differently, that a bitrate ladder tuned for a broadband audience punishes mobile viewers, and that the ad server being slow looks exactly like a player bug until you check the beacons.
The practical output of that experience is a device-matrix strategy that is defensible on cost. The matrix is effectively infinite, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, consoles, iOS, Android, and browser and player-version combinations. Testing all of it every release is unaffordable and Testing an arbitrary subset is indefensible, so we tier by your real watch time.
